Insulin Therapy, Hyperglycemia, and Hypertension in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract
Hypertension, an established and modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease and mortality, is among the most prevalent chronic health conditions worldwide.1 Hypertension is particularly common among people with diabetes mellitus.2 The close association of diabetes with hypertension is commonly thought to be due to underlying obesity, insulin resistance, and/or hyperinsulinemia.2-5 Hyperglycemia itself may also cause changes in vascular function and structure that lead to hypertension.6,7 However, the long-term effect of hyperglycemia on blood pressure is not known.
