Abstract
Sexual assault victims (SAV) are seven times more at risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and can experience nighttime posttraumatic symptoms (NPS). NPS constitute a crucial treatment target given their contribution to the persistence of PTSD symptoms over time. This systematic review presents the effectiveness of several treatments targeting nightmares and sleep disturbances in SAV suffering from PTSD. This review includes an assessment of the methodological quality of 24 primary studies. Imagery rehearsal therapy (IRT) and prazosin appear to be the most recurrent and proven effective interventions to increase the sleep quality, followed by the Exposition, Relaxation, Retranscripting Therapy (ERRT).Keywords
