Ionisation and excitation to Rydberg states in collisions of fully stripped ions with hydrogen atoms

Abstract
Collisional excitation to Rydberg states of hydrogen by multiply charged ions is examined in the frame of the symmetric eikonal approximation and the classical trajectory Monte Carlo method. The latter method is also employed to obtain single differential ionisation cross sections. The dependence on the projectile charge Zp is analysed for different impact velocities. Departures from the Z2p law predicted by the first Born approximation and saturation effects are discussed.
