Abstract
A multilayer Kohonen feature map is introduced with a logarithmic search complexity to design image codebooks for memoryless vector quantization at bit rates below 0.75 bit/pixel. The images encoded by the feature map codebooks with both the logarithmic and the exhaustive searches provide the same perceptual quality. The effectiveness of the design is demonstrated by comparing the codebooks with those designed by the pairwise nearest neighbor algorithm.Keywords
