Abstract
Synchronized phasor measurements are traced from their origins in computer relaying to present applications in power system operation, protection, and control. The principle behind the measurement technique is reviewed along with the details of phasor measurement units (PMUs). Two IEEE standards, applicable to PMU technology, the 'COMTRADE' standard, and the 'SYNCHROPHASOR' standards are summarized. Applications of PMUs to state estimation, measurement based control, adaptive protection, and a new generation of remedial action schemes are describedKeywords
