Studies on Ultrasonic Butt Welding System Using A Large Capacity Static Induction Thyristor Power Amplifier

Abstract
Ultrasonic butt welding using one powerful 15 kHz vibration source and a large capacity power amplifier is studied. The vibration source designed has eight 15 kHz boltclamped Langevin type PZT transducers with 150% capacity of a 19 kHz transducer and are driven by a newly designed 50 kW or 100 kW solid-state power amplifier. Vibration characteristics under large vibration amplitude are measured. For good welding results, a matching circuit appropriate for the welding load is required to improve the power factor of the system. Welding specimens of 6 mm thick aluminum plate are successfully joined end to end.
