Abstract
By means of a servo motor drive, new modes of measurements are possible with the modifiedWeissenberg rheogoniometer already described: In addition to the usual stressing experiment (constant shear rate\(\dot \gamma _0\)), creep tests (constant shear stressp12), harmonic vibrations (even of large amplitudes), and the measurement of the elastic recovery can be performed. Moreover, within certain limits, a pre-selected, general history of shear strainγ(t) or shear stressp12(t) can be imposed to the specimen under test, and alwaysp12,p11 −p22 (first normal stress difference),γ(t) and\(\dot \gamma (t)\) are obtainable and can be recorded. The recovery is determined without any loss in the apparatus, because the elastic energy stored in the specimen, is only used as an indicator for the servo control system. The test specimen was a melt of low density polyethylene (“melt I”), the test temperature was 150°C. The following results were obtained: In creep with a high enoughp12 = const., the first normal stress differencep11 −p22 is a function of time with a pronounced maximum. At the onset of the recovery measurement withp12 → 0,p11 −p22 decreases relatively slowly, similar to the decay of the constrained recoverable shear strainγ r (t′) witht′ = duration of the recovery. After stressing experiments, the total recovery\(\gamma _R \equiv \mathop {\lim }\limits_{t' \to 0} {\mathbf{ }}\gamma _r (t')\) is a function of total shear or, correspondingly, of the duration of the primary shear deformation.γ R shows a pronounced maximum like the functionsp12 andp11 −p22. The maximum ofγ R occurs only a little earlier than the maximum ofp11 −p22. According toLodge, γ R consists of an instantaneous and a delayed portion,γ i andγ d (t′), respectively. This could be confirmed indirectly. For the stress ratioΓ ≡ (p11 −p22)/p12, the test results show the relation 0.5 <Γ/γ R <2. In oscillations of circular frequencyω with large amplitudes, the first normal stress difference oscillates with the double frequency 2ω, and the experimental data fulfill a relation derived theoretically byLodge for the rubberlike liquid. Finally, the superposition of shear steps is discussed. This procedure shall give data for the change of the junction density of the melt during shear flow.
