Nocturia in the Elderly

Abstract
Little is known about the role of nocturia in the lives of older people. Of 140 older adults living in subsidized housing, 72% rose at least once a night to urinate and 24% routinely rose three or more times. Nocturia was associated with both diurnal urinary frequency and urinary incontinence. Many informants, especially women, attributed disturbed sleep and fatigue to nocturia. Greater attention must be given to the role of nocturia in sleep disturbance, fatigue, depression, and falls in the elderly.
