Abstract
Ozone pretreatment studies of nonbiodegradable substituted aromatic compounds were conducted to evaluate the effects of ozonation on the biodegradability of the oxidation products as a function of COD- DOC-elimination and ozone consumption. In the case of substituted aromatic compounds a 60–70% decrease of the COD-value and a 30–40% decrease of the DOC-value lead to biodegradable products (BOD5-/COD = 0.4) independent of the pH and the initial concentration of compounds. To reach good biodegradability of the oxidation products 3 mg ozone on average per 1 mg initial DOC are necessary.
