THE DETERMINATION OF THE CIRCULATING BLOOD VOLUME WITH CARBON MONOXIDE

Abstract
The completeness of mixing of CO in the circulating blood has been studied with respect to the time taken in rebreathing, the amount of gas inhaled, and the effect of exercise. Reasons for the difference in the results of blood volume determinations by the dye methods and the CO method are discussed. In normal persons the volume has been found to lie between 60.4 and 75.5 cc. per kilogram of body weight or between 1990 and 2860 cc. per sq. m. of body surface.
