The Electrostatic Contribution to the Lattice Energy of Some Ordered Spinels

Abstract
The electrostatic contribution to the lattice energy of some ordered spinels is calculated. It is made plausible that also in the case of certain spinels that do not show any long‐range ordering, a considerable amount of short‐range order is to be expected. As a consequence the lattice energy of ``inversed'' spinels containing different ions at octahedral positions, is increased with respect to the corresponding ``normal'' spinels containing one type of ions at octahedral interstices.
