Working in pairs as a means for design knowledge building: an empirical study

Abstract
Pair programming is increasingly attractingresearchers' and practitionersý attention. One of theclaimed benefits of pair programming consists of easingsocialization among programmers, with the effect oftransferring tacit knowledge. Designing software systemsrequires a strong employment of tacit knowledge, such asindividual experience and skills.In this paper We explore the hypothesis that workingin pairs can speed up and enforce the knowledge buildingprocess among designers. We name "pair designing" theapplication of pair programming concepts to the designstage. An experiment has been performed to test the effectof pair designing on knowledge building. This paperdiscusses preliminary results, which confirm thehypothesis of a positive effect of working in pairs on theprocess of knowledge building.
