Neutron Emission Followingμ-Meson Capture in Silver and Lead

Abstract

The neutron yield from the capture of cosmic-ray ${\mu }^{-}$ mesons in silver and lead has been measured by use of a high-efficiency Cd-loaded liquid-scintillator tank. The average multiplicities were determined to be ${\overline{\nu }}_{\mathrm{Ag}}=1.60\mathrm{}\pm 0.18$ and ${\overline{\nu }}_{\mathrm{Pb}}=1.64\mathrm{}\pm 0.16$.
