Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the main usage of virtual reality (VR)-based simulation and training within health profession education. This covers the three domains of technical, interpersonal and clinical skills as well as discussing the role of VR-based training in assessment of learner performance and competence. The specific advantages of VR training are identified along with some of the potential pitfalls. Further discussion is provided regarding the emerging role of VR resources within an integrated ‘placement’ and the potential for it to help with partial replacement of clinical training time. The chapter concludes with some thoughts regarding future developments of this rapidly evolving technology, including haptic feedback, multiple user engagement via avatars and the possibility of augmented reality training within the clinical setting.
