Abstract
Woolen fabrics were treated at 1 mm Hg pressure in nitrogen and oxygen plasmas for 5 to 90 min at power settings of 50 and 100 W. Samples were tested for surface oxidation, area shrinkage, weight loss, fabric tear strength, Allwörden reaction, and yellowness index. Samples treated in oxygen lost more water-soluble material than samples treated in nitrogen under similar conditions. Treatment in oxygen was more effective than in nitrogen for bleaching and controlling felting shrinkage. Fabric shrinkage was decreased to less than 10% without impairing tear strength.
