Writing a Commemoration: A Technique for Restoring Equilibrium After a Crisis

Abstract
After experiencing trauma, clients may enter a state of disequilibrium. In this state, clients cannot access functional coping skills. In this article, we examine crises in schools that involve extreme traumatic situations, which may include death. Also examined are disequilibrium, normal grief, coping skills, and creative techniques that improve clients’ feelings throughout the grieving process. A case study of counselors utilizing the preparation of a commemorative to assist clients in returning to a state of equilibrium is presented.
