Abstract
It is shown that the collisionless sheath model found in textbooks is internally inconsistent. It generates results that contradict the main assumption of the sheath model, namely the negligible ionization. The source of the inconsistency is in the improper boundary condition at the plasma–sheath interface and in the inconsistent derivation of the sheath equations. Keywords
