Abstract
The kidney exerts multiple functions, and pathophysiological interactions between the kidney and the heart have important clinical implications, but it has only recently become clear that these interactions should be studied across the whole spectrum of reduced kidney function and not only in cases with severe, end-stage renal disease (ESRD), as has been done for many years.1 The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), defined as a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 3 months, exceeds 10% in the adult population and reaches 47% in subjects older than 70 years, according to data from the USA, with a trend towards a recent increasing prevalence.1,2Keywords
