Abstract
In cooperation with the U. S. Depart-ment of Agriculture and the regulatory officials of the other states involved, the California Department of Agriculture is engaged in a sincere effort to eradicate all existing infestation of Trogoderma granarium within it''s borders. Following a federally approved procedure, an intensive effort is being made to find all existing infestation; all infested premises are being fumigated in their entirety using 51b. of methyl bromide per 1000 ft? under gas tight covers, using measures assuring a concentration of 2 lb. per 1000 ft3 for any 24 hours, or 1.5 lb. for any 36 hours, during a continuous 48-hour period, based on regular sampling of the most critical conditions encountered. Also repeated spraying of the surface area adjacent to the building under fumigation, immediately prior to fumigation, using 5 lb. of malathion, actual, in 100 gal. of diesel oil. Two hundred and ten premises representing approximately 47,000,000 ftr are involved of which 1/3 in number and 2/3 in volume were completed without detecting any recurring infestation. Attainment of the objective would seem to be restricted only by the degree to which it is possible to locate all existing infestation, and the degree to which it is possible to prevent further spread in the interim.
