Abstract
Samples of coat and core of coated diamonds have been analysed for nitrogen by burning them in pure oxygen and analysing the gaseous products of combustion by gas chromatography. The samples of diamond coat contained 0·047–0·130% nitrogen, those of core 0·058–0·148% nitrogen. One sample of diamond coat was examined by electron probe x-ray microanalysis. The inclusions were found to contain silicon and oxygen in varying proportions. Electron microscopy showed that the inclusions were polycrystalline. A possible mode of formation of diamond coat is discussed.
