Sickle Hemoglobinopathy and Edwardsiella tarda Meningitis

Abstract
In a recent review of human infection with Edwardsiella tarda, clinical similarities of disease caused by this organism and by Salmonella were described. The association of salmonellosis with sickle cell anemia and with other hemoglobinopathies has been well established. In this report we describe a serious E tarda infection in a patient with sickle C hemoglobinopathy. This observation further attests to the similarity of infections caused by these two closely related enteric pathogens. Our patient represents the third reported case of E tarda meningitis, and the first, to our knowledge, to have survived.
