This paper is in two parts. The first argues that the insights gained in the recent expansion of the "history of the book" should be applied to the history of textbooks. Textbooks are important instruments of cultural transmission, but they are complex objects in which culture, pedagogic theory, and the commercial imperatives of publishing all play their part In the 19th century, the modem textbook market was created as part of the new conditions of industrial society. The second part of the paper focuses on this situation, and looks in detail at the construction and use of Latin grammars. Special attention is given to the work of Benjamin Kennedy (1804-1889), whose Revised Latin Primer of 1888 has been the standard school grammar in England since its publication.Der erste Teil dieser Studie macht deuttich, daß die jüngsten Erkenntnisgewinne auf dem Gebiet der Buchgeschichte sich auch auf die Geschichte der Lehrwerke übertragen lassen. Diese sind nient nur wichtige Instrumente der Kulturvermittlung, sie sind daruber hinaus komplexe Objekte, bei denen Pädagogik und wirtschaftliche und kommerzielle Notwendigkeiten eine Rolle spie- len. Im 19. Jahrhundert ergibt sich die Schaffung eines speziellen Schulbuchmarktes logisch aus den veränderten gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen des Industriezeitalters. Der zweite Teil des Beitrags betont vor allem diesen letzten Aspekt wobei ein besonderes Augenmerk der Ausarbeitung und Benutzung lateinischer Grammatiken gilt respektive der Werke von Benjamin Kennedy (1804-1889), dessen Revised latin Primer in England lange Zeit als die bedeu- tendste Schulgrammatik galt.La première partie de cette étude montre que les avancées récentes de l'histoire du livre peuvent être appliquées à celle des manuels qui sont d'importants instruments de transmission culturelle, mais qui sont aussi des objets complexes dans lesquels la pédagogie et les impératifs économiques et commerciaux jouent un rôle essentiel.
