Antenna configurations for over-the-air testing of wireless automotive communication systems

Abstract
Modern automobiles comprise a multitude of wireless transmission systems, e.g., for mobile and car-to-x communications. The characterisation and verification of these complex systems, which connect the acquisition of information with the operational status of cars and other traffic participants and their environment, raise new and stringent requirements on reliable techniques for electromagnetic measurements and system performance evaluation. This paper discusses the over-the-air testing approach intended for the recently installed virtual road simulation and test area in Ilmenau. The approach is based on a realistic reproduction of multipath clusters as a key figure of mobile propagation channels, by means of appropriately configured multi-antenna systems.
