Abstract
The deformation of particle image patterns by strong velocity gradients and out-of-pattern motions is a major source of error for the PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) technique. This deformation is investigated and its effect on conventional PIV techniques is quantified for 2D flows. Simulations and comparisons with independent experiments verify the results. Keywords
