Origin of glass formation

Abstract

Close parallels exist in Mössbauer-site signatures of ${\mathrm{Ge}}_{2\mathrm{-}2\mathrm{x}}$ ${\mathrm{Sn}}_{2\mathrm{x}}$ ${\mathrm{S}}_3$ glasses and crystalline alloys. The drastic loss of glass-forming tendency in this ternary for x≥0.62 correlates exactly with a change in molecular structure of corresponding crystals, thus favoring microcrystalline origin of glass formation.
