Salivary secretion during hypnosis.

Abstract
The average secretion from the left parotid of 4 [male] and 3 [female] college students over 5-min. periods on 4 days in response to stimulation of 1 cc. lemon juice was .226 cc. per min. during hypnosis and .379 during the control waking state. (Diff./[sigma] diff. = 7.286.) Diminution occurred in 26 of 28 exptl. sessions and was most evident in the 1st min. after stimulation. Of 2 non-hypnotized control subjects, 1 showed an average decrease of salivation during simulation of hypnosis and 1 did not. Secretion was greater in those who reported liking lemon juice than in those who disliked it. Minute-by-minute quantitative records are given.
