A Compact Electric-Motor Driven Spinning Disc Aerosol Generator

Abstract
The design and performance characteristics of a spinning disc aerosol generator are presented and discussed. Two generators of the type described have been in use for about two years for the production of monodisperse insoluble iron oxide particles containing various nonleaching radioactive tags. Aerosols with median diameters between 1 and 10 microns and a geometric standard deviation averaging 1.08 have been produced routinely for studies of aerosol deposition in the respiratory tract. The generator operates from a 110 volt ac line, has a low (5.5 cfm) volumetric output and convenient external adjustment features.
