Abstract
THE wasting syndrome is one of the most devastating aspects of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Until therapies are developed that eradicate the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or halt its replication, wasting will be a major cause of morbidity and mortality in AIDS.1 2 3 This paper will review the metabolic disturbances that occur during AIDS, put them in the context of studies of cachexia with infection and cancer, and attempt to define the role of these disturbances in the pathogenesis of wasting.Weight Loss and Death from InanitionIn the absence of disease, starvation leads to death at 66 percent of . . .Keywords
