Abstract
SUMMARY Optimal designs are given for estimating some of the genetic parameters needed to describe a population of breeds when testing facilities are limited and the number of breeds to be tested is potentially large. The best design for estimating the relative proportion of genetic variation within and between breeds is to have a large number of breeds, a few sires per breed, and a few offspring per sire, the total number of animals per breed being of the order of 10 to 20.
