Abstract
To the Editor: In an attempt to monitor the use of smokeless tobacco during the fifth game of the 1986 World Series, I used a stopwatch to time televised images of players and coaches actively chewing and dipping smokeless tobacco on camera. A total of 23 minutes and 55 seconds of perceptible use of tobacco was televised, from the national anthem through the final out. At the rate of $750,000 per 30 seconds, this equals up to $36 million in free advertising. The game lasted three hours and nine minutes. The 1986 World Series was viewed by approximately 25 million . . .
