Abstract
High-resolution x-ray absorption spectra of high- and low-spin compounds have been analyzed using a newly developed general crystal-field computer program. The calculations show clearly that the gross features of the multiplet structure at the ,3 absorption edge can be used to determine the spin state of the 3 configuration in Ni and Cu compounds.
