Abstract
The asymptotic form of the eigenvalue equation for optical waveguides of circular cross section is derived using only plane wave concepts, i.e., phase changes, Fresnel’s and Snell’s laws. Both step and parabolic refractive index profiles are treated using this method. Keywords
