Abstract
This paper describes the principle of operation of the modular multilevel converter (M2C) and presents a new PWM scheme which can be applied for an arbitrary number of voltage levels. Simulation results are presented for a 6 kV, 6.24 MVA converter. Particular attention is paid to the converter specific phenomenon of circulating currents. Keywords
