Strio-pallidal projection in the monkey.

Abstract
Analysis of the distribution of gliosis after a variety of lesions in the caudate nucleus and putamen has been used to map the projection of the corpus striatum upon the globus pallidus and substantia nigra. It was found that peripheral parts of the striatum project upon the external segment of the pallidum; however, at present it cannot be determined whether the central parts of the striatum project exclusively upon the internal segment or upon both segments. Though there is considerable convergence of cortical, thalamic and cerebellar influences upon the striatum, it follows from this study that there is even greater convergence of effects upon the cells of the globus pallidus. The organized nature of these connections shows that parts of the globus pallidus are influenced predominately by one or other areas of the cortex or intralaminar nuclei of the thalamus.
