Abstract
Real wave packets and group velocities are considered for linear, dispersive homogeneous (but possibly anisotropic) absorptive media. In inhomogeneous media the rays are determined by the Fermat principle. Coupled with the relevant constraints this yields the Hamilton equations of geometrical optics for real rays in absorbing media. Keywords
