Abstract
For written tii.scus.sion* Paper No. 7001 A RESUME OF THE AERODYNAMICINVESTIGATIONS FOR THE FORTHROAD AND THE SEVERNBRIDGES by Denis Eugene Walshe, B.Sc. Aerodynamics Division, National Physical Laboratory SYNOPSIS Air-flow over bluff structures can cause oscillations of the structure which may possibly become severe and lead to failure. The Paper describes the investigations for the Forth Road Bridge and theSevern Bridge, both of which are suspension bridges. They were undertaken primarily to assist the designers by developing aerodynamically stable configurations for the suspended structures. The investigations were extended to predetermine the susceptibility to wind-induced oscillations of the suspended structure at various stages of construction, and included tests on the towers for the Severn Bridge...
