Infrared Studies of Oxygen-Containing Groups on the Surface of Carbon Black

Abstract
Results of this infrared study give strong qualitative support for the presence of quinones and support the presence of lactones. Considerable chemical reactivity is associated with the presence of these two groups. Absorption typical of phenols and ethers was obtained in the 1205–1195 cm−1 and 1275-1265 cm−1 regions; and it is suggested by this study that the oxygen not present in quinone, lactone, or phenolic form is present as aromatic ring-type ether groups.
