Abstract
This article explores the cultural and political contexts of efforts to reform Australian libraries in the wake of the Munn-Pitt report of 1935. The attitudes and assumptions underlying the reformers' rhetoric are suggested as a major factor in their failure to attract support across the political spectrum.Keywords
