Optical Absorption Characteristics of Pink Ruby

Abstract

Absorption cross-section values for polarized light have been measured for pink-ruby specimens by a multiple thickness correlation method. The values (in 10⁻²⁰ cm²) are: σ_B^‖ = 38.1, σ_G^⊥ = 22.8, σ_B^⊥ = 22.5, σ_G^‖ = 7.23, ${{\sigma }_{R_1}}^{\perp }=1.22$, ${{\sigma }_{R_2}}^{\perp }=0.975$, ${{\sigma }_{R2}}^{\Vert }=0.263$, and ${{\sigma }_{R_1}}^{\Vert }=0.168$, where B and G stand for the blue and green broad bands, R₁, R₂, the R-lines.
