Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy and Cytarabine

Abstract
A patient with previously diagnosed chronic lymphocytic leukemia developed progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) and was treated with cytarabine, with a clinical remission. Histologic studies of a brain biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of PML. Viral and immunological studies suggest that the biopsy contained a papovavirus similar to an agent isolated from another patient with PML. Further controlled clinical trials with antiviral agents are indicated.
