Abstract
A model of strong interactions with the octet symmetry of Gell-Mann and Ne'eman is considered, and a spontaneous breakdown of this symmetry leading to nondegenerate baryon masses is sought. The Gell-Mann mass formula is deduced for the physically relevant symmetry-breaking solutions. Keywords
