New Syndrome of Neonatal Hypoglycemia

Abstract
SYMPTOMATIC hypoglycemia in the newborn infant occurs approximately once in 500 live births.1 Over 80 per cent of these infants are small for their gestational age.2 The occurrence of symptomatic hypoglycemia in the smaller infant of twin births has been emphasized.3 A survey of all admissions to a premature nursery has shown that 4 to 6 per cent of all premature infants have significant hypoglycemia and that approximately 15 per cent of all symptomatic infants who are small for their gestational age have hypoglycemia.4 This has led to the concept that idiopathic hypoglycemia in the newborn infant is often a . . .
