Abstract
The author reports the impact of chromatic dispersion in optical millimetre-wave systems operating in the 1.55 µm wavelength window. Experimental and theoretical results confirm the dramatical millimetre-power degradation in conventional amplitude modulated systems using, for example, external optical modulators. In comparison, by use of a similar setup a self-heterodyne-based system concept has been investigated showing negligible dependence on the chromatic dispersion.
