The eye and the pen : Julien Gracq, geographer, — The geographer gets the opportunity of questionning his own cultural identity when he discovers or rereads Julien Gracq's works. Critical studies have almost entirely ignored the geographical point of view which is always present in his works and is shown in his choice of words but even more so in his general attitude and his keen interest any geographer will recognize. The fact that this geographical culture could be incorporated into a literary project as a whole is due to the traditional type of geographical education which Julien Gracq received and which was still closely linked to a classical type of education. Julien Gracq's works take us back to the time when geography was a straight-forward affair of accurate observation and well- written books.Lire ou relire Julien Gracq est l'occasion pour le géographe de s'interroger sur son identité culturelle.
