Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase Gene Variants and Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma

Abstract

The nitric oxide synthase 3 (NOS3) enzyme catalyzes the production of nitric oxide, which influences the tone of luminal structures with smooth muscle.¹ NOS3 is of interest in glaucoma because this isoform is in the human outflow pathway² and in the ocular endothelial cells in the vasculature for retinal ganglion cells.³
