Digital signal processors are defined, and the characteristics that must be considered by the engineer are discussed. The architectural features of the processors are examined, with an emphasis on the multiplier-accumulator, which is considered one of the most important features. Single and multiprocessor operations are discussed, and the pitfalls in using benchmark performance figures are examined.
