Some estimates of the general age distribution, fertility and rate of natural increase of the African population of British East Africa

Abstract

This paper deals with the age distribution, fertility and natural increase among the African population of East Africa. This is the first occasion that an effort has been made to calculate the age distribution for the African population of this area, and comparisons are made with the age distribution in certain other countries. The fertility data have been drawn from the sample census carried out in 1948 and the natural increase estimates have been built up from fertility and vital registration statistics.
