Abstract
The temperature profiles of a semi-infinite slab heated with a scanning laser beam are calculated. The effects of the scanning velocity, the beam radius, and the beam shape on the temperature profiles are investigated. It is demonstrated that there exists a critical velocity below which the effects of the moving source become practically neglibible. The critical velocity is equal to the ratio of the diffusivity to the beam radius. Keywords
