Observation of Magnetoelectric Linear Birefringence

Abstract
We report the first experimental observation of optical linear birefringence induced in molecular liquids by crossed electric and magnetic fields perpendicular to the direction of light propagation. The optical axes coincide with the external fields, and the strength is bilinear in the electric and magnetic fields.Keywords
