Nuclear Deformations from the Interference Effects between Coulomb and Nuclear Excitations in InelasticαScattering onSm152

Abstract
α particles in the energy range 11-18 MeV were used to excite the 2+ and 4+ members of the ground-state band in Sm152. The measured excitation probabilities were analyzed in the framework of Coulomb excitation and the deformed optical model. The resulting electrical transition matrix elements and optical-model deformation parameters are 0+m(E2)2+=(1.86±0.03)e b, 0+m(E4)4+=(0.37±0.09)e b2, β2=0.214±0.007, and β4=0.038±0.007.
